Hello, my name is Mrs. Judith Chekamondo from Uganda, mother of baby Hazel who underwent a successful pediatric heart surgery by Dr. Rajesh Sharma JP Hospital Noida. As an urgent care nurse who was accustomed to listening patient’s heart sounds through a stethoscope while at work, I didn’t panic when my daughter Hazel’s doctor detected what sounded like a heart murmur a whooshing noise between the heart beats which which can be benign or a sign of something serious, a day after the newborn’s birth. Due to lack of proper medical care facilities and shortage of medical professionals, we were referred to pediatric heart surgeon Dr. Rajesh Sharma at JP Hospital Noida in India.
We started online research about the doctor and the hospital and after going over few patient testimonies, we were quite convinced and decided to contact him via Indian Med Guru Consultants. The group assisted us with planning, scheduling appointment with the doctor, medical visa arrangements, travel, transport, food, etc. My husband, Martin, accompanied us during this medical trip to India.
On arrival at the international airport we were greeted by an executive who escorted us to the hotel. Next day we were escorted to JP Hospital, Noida where we met Dr. Rajesh Sharma who did his own stethoscope listening and ordered an electrocardiogram (EKG) to evaluate the heart’s electric system and echocardiogram for assessing the structure of the heart and measure the blood flow.
With each test my husband Mark and me felt our anxiety level rising. Dr. Rajesh Sharma had the awesome responsibility of telling us that Hazel had a hole in her heart and he was so calm and reassuring. He spoke slowly and it helped that he has a lovely accent and helped us understand fully about what to expect during this whole process. Hazel was diagnosed with ventricular septal defect (VSD), a common heart defect present at birth. As per the doctor, it is a hole between the two pumping chambers of the heart, the left and right ventricle. Every time the heart beats the heart and lungs have to work harder which makes the breathing more difficult and a child can develop lung infections and may have feeding issues. Dr. Rajesh Sharma told us early on that open heart surgery was a probability if in case the VSD’s didn’t resolve which made sense to fix the hole now while Hazel is still young and before it became a serious issue.
Our patient manager from Indian Med Guru Consultants was supportive throughout the entire process and never made us feel rushed or worried. She is a kind person who truly cared for Hazel and our family. One month before her first birthday, Hazel underwent open heart surgery to perform the repair. Dr. Rajesh Sharma placed her on a heart lung machine and stopped her heart which is often the most frightening part for parents- knowing that my child’s heart will be stopped. However having a skilled surgeon and being attentive to the details during the post-operative period is the key to the first 24 to 48 hours post surgery which is quite critical. My husband and I had been prepared for what we would see and what to expect while the team of doctors and nurses were constantly looking for signs of poor cardiac output and readying Hazel for discharge.
Hazel’s five day hospitalization went smoothly and she was discharged under Dr. Rajesh Sharma’s care. According to him, his young patient and her healthy heart are good as gold and he anticipates a limitless future.
I want to wish my deepest gratitude to Dr. Rajesh Sharma, nurses at JP Hospital and Indian Med Guru Consultants for successful pediatric heart surgery by Dr. Rajesh Sharma JP Hospital Noida. Dr. Rajesh Sharma is a miracle worker and his bedside manners are amazing. Thank you to all the staff for offering kind words and caring for my baby girl.
